All About Me

I'm a stay-at-home mom, who taught Kindergarten for about 5 years and worked for almost that long doing respite and habilitation for kids with autism. I really have a teacher's heart and love helping others to learn and grow - especially children - which J definitely has a heart for as well, which is why he's in training to be a pediatric surgeon. My hubby, J/daddy, our son, Owen, and I moved to the Midwest last year (from the desert) for J's fellowship and we are figuring out how to be our own little family (on our own - away from all extended family) - along with our new little one, Noah - who was born here, while J works like crazy to finish up his training, so he can get a real job and we can finally be "grown ups!"

Owen is a crazy, into everything, adventurous toddler who doesn't believe that there is anything he can't do! Noah is a bright-eyed, inquisitive babe - who is always watching and learning - and who can't wait to keep up with his big brother! I am so proud to be their momma and to help them to learn to soar - although they are both growing way quicker than my momma heart would like!

Before I started this blog, I looked and I couldn't find a community for the family's of surgeons or even medical professionals of any type (although, I have since found others who were searching for the same and actually formed an amazing community). When I married J, I found myself thrust into the world of residencies, interviews, fellowships, and the rest with no more medical knowledge than what I gleaned from old episodes of ER and Grey's Anatomy (which J hates that I love) - and when we were dating/engaged, I searched for someone to connect with who had been their and could help me through this journey, but at that time all I found were scary statistics about divorce and bitter commentary about how disliked surgeons are - when I really wanted and needed to know that there was someone else out there who got it - who was in my shoes - packing her home alone while her husband worked 80+hour weeks, trying to take care of her sick baby while sick herself while her husband is a thousand miles away at a conference and all of his medical knowledge only makes things scarier - especially if he's a surgeon and always sees the worst of the worst. So, I started to blog to try to find my place in this medical world (and in the world in general) - hoping to find others in similar places - and since I've delved deeper into this blogging world over the last year, I've found there are so many of you out there - with similar and different struggles - and I'd love to get to know you and discover how we can support each other - even if we can't fully understand one another's worlds!

The goal of this blog is to document our story so we can look back and remember where we have been and to form a community with others out there like us! This is a blog about my family and our life - about being a wife, a mom, a Christian, caring for our home, being creative, and all of the things that make this life worth living. I'd love to connect with other mommas of all types (boy moms, girl moms, crunchy moms, conventional moms, wanna-be moms), other wives and significant others of surgeons/doctors in training or out, other Christians,  other desert dwellers of the Southwest (or former desert dwellers), Midwestern-ers, and you, whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever part of life you are in.

I'd like to welcome friends and family looking to get a closer peak into our lives, welcome the curious who always wondered what it would be like to "marry a doctor" or what a doctor's life is like outside the office/hospital - I think you will be more than a little surprised - and to welcome whoever else may stumble upon this space - I believe regardless of and because of our differences we can all learn from one another. I can't wait to get to know you all and for you to get to know us too!
